Sidney Poitier was born on February 20, 1927, in Miami, Florida. He was the fifth of nine children in a poor family. His father worked as a cabin boy and his mother as a maid. Poitier’s childhood home was located near the train tracks where he would watch freight trains pass by daily. Due to this proximity, he became fascinated with trains at an early age and often dreamed of driving them.

In 1963, Poitier became the first black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, and the second black person to win an Oscar for any category. Poitier has directed a number of popular movies such as To Sir, with Love; A Piece of the Action; and Stir Crazy. He also produced them in 1976 with his production company, Sidney Poitier Productions.: Poitier’s breakthrough role as a racist soldier in “No Way Out” (1950) was followed by a dozen other roles that allowed him to showcase his potential. In 1956, he took the lead in the film “The Blackboard Jungle” and became one of the first black actors to reach superstar status. His Oscar-nominated performance in “Lilies of the Field” (1963) was followed by another landmark role later that year.
